Craniofacial Orthodontic and Special Needs Fellowship

This was the first ADA accredited post orthodontic residency fellowship program in the USA that was designed to provide advanced training and skills for the management of patients with Craniofacial Anomalies and Special Care requirements (CFA&SC). These patients have a wide range of congenital and acquired craniofacial anomalies that affect the craniofacial complex and stomatognathic system, requiring complex multidisciplinary care. The focus of this subspecialty of orthodontics includes but is not limited to: patients with cleft lip and palate, syndromic craniosynostosis and other craniofacial anomalies, dentofacial deformities, craniofacial surgery, orthognathic surgery, distraction osteogenesis, nasoalveolar molding and special care orthodontics. Graduates of the program will develop skills in the diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with complex craniofacial anomalies, cleft lip and palate. They will work with both two and three dimensional diagnostic record sets in performing craniofacial orthodontic diagnosis and treatment plans. The Fellow will be exposed to a large clinical population of both pediatric and adult patients with congenital and acquired craniofacial abnormalities. The goal of the program is to train individuals to take an active role on a cleft and craniofacial treatment team.

Eligibility: Candidates for this fellowship program must have graduated from an CODA accredited dental school and orthodontic residency program, and be eligible for full licensures in New York State. Craniofacial and Special Care Orthodontic Fellowship

Jacobi Medical Center offers an ADA-accredited fellowship program for graduate orthodontists to learn treatment of congenital and acquired dentofacial and craniofacial deformities. Fellows’ clinical responsibilities include management of a roster of patients, from infant to adult, formulating treatment plans, routine visits, and planning surgical treatment. The program offers a special focus on orthognathic treatment. Fellows participate in multidisciplinary conferences, didactic courses, literature review and research. Graduates are prepared to recognize and treatment plan patients with extreme dentofacial complexities in a multidisciplinary setting.

Fellows can complete a full time one year program or a part-time two year program, with preference for part time fellows. The fellowship is funded, with fellows receiving a stipend (based on PGY level) and benefits.

Fellows accepted into the Craniofacial, Surgical, and Special Care Orthodontics Program at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine will be provided with advanced clinical, didactic, and research training. During the 1-year program, the fellow will be exposed to the diagnoses, treatment planning, and clinic execution of orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic services to pediatric, adolescents, and adult patients who have congenital and acquired craniofacial abnormalities.  The goal of the program is to train the fellow to attain a level of competency that enables them to recognize, diagnose and treat patients with craniofacial anomalies and special needs in a hospital-based team care setting. The Craniofacial Fellowship Program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and the American Dental Association (ADA).

Cleft, Craniofacial and Special Care Orthodontic Fellowship

The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is offering a one-year fellowship training program in cleft, craniofacial and special care orthodontics.  The orthodontic division is a full-time cleft-craniofacial practice that treats patients from birth through adulthood.  The scope of the practice involves pre-surgical infant orthopedics for the cleft patient, phase I treatment and preparation for alveolar bone grafting, and comprehensive orthodontic treatment, including orthognathic surgical planning and preparation. Weekly team meetings, didactic and case-based conference, literature review and dedicated research time are integral to the fellowship.  Upon completion of the program, a Certificate in Cleft, Craniofacial and Special Care Orthodontics from The Department of Plastic Surgery, University of Pittsburgh is awarded. The Cleft and Craniofacial Program is located in the Primary Children’s Hospital, a tertiary care facility that serves five states.  The Program has three craniofacial surgeons, a craniofacial surgery fellow and a craniofacial orthodontist. A high volume of presurgical orthopedics, distraction osteogenesis, and orthognathic procedures provide training for the management of patients with complex craniofacial anomalies and special care needs requiring multidisciplinary care. The Center for Craniofacial Disorders at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish offers a Clinical Fellowship in Speech Pathology focused in Craniofacial Disorders.  The goal of the Fellowship is to provide clinical research experience for speech pathologists who want to be the next generation clinical researchers in craniofacial disorders. Applications are due by April 1 and the Fellowship is available in July. It is a paid position leading to the completion of the Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY).  The ideal Fellowship candidate will have strong demonstrated interest in craniofacial disorders, a Master’s or PhD in Communication Disorders/Speech-Language Pathology, will have completed a student internship with clinical cleft and craniofacial experience and/or completed a research project in craniofacial disorders. They should have a professional goal of developing into a clinical researcher in the specialty area of craniofacial disorders. We have found that students who have worked as a research assistant or directed a research lab for one of their professors have excellent skills to excel in this position.

Craniofacial Speech Pathology Fellowship

This speech fellowship program is a full-time 12 month experience consisting of clinical and research training in the assessment and treatment of:

• Other craniofacial anomalies
• Velopharyngeal dysfunction and Resonance disorders
• Syndromes commonly associated with clefting/craniofacial anomalies, including emphasis on the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome
• Feeding/swallowing disorders in patients with craniofacial anomalies
• Pediatric speech disorders, with an emphasis on articulation and motor speech disorders

The fellow will work with the Cleft Lip and Palate Center, Center for Complex Craniofacial Disorders, Velopharyngeal Dysfunction Program, 22q Center, and the Speech Pathology Department at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The fellow will also spend time working on craniofacial-speech research and speech outcome/QI projects. The fellowship can be designed to include completion of required clinical hours and training to meet CFY requirements; however applicants who already have their CCC’s are also welcome to apply if they desire additional training in craniofacial anomalies.

LEND Speech-Language Pathology Fellowship

The Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental & Related Disabilities (LEND) post graduate degree fellowship in speech-language pathology is a full-time position that lasts for 12 months, and is primarily clinical in nature. This experience includes all clinical hours and requirements for completion of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association fellowship experience. Primary clinical training occurs at the Child Development & Rehabilitation Center (CDRC) Clinics at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital/Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon, with training and mentorship provided by our faculty of speech-language pathologists. Clinical fellows engage in multidisciplinary team assessments in rotations through our Craniofacial, Feeding, Autism, Down Syndrome, Child Development, and Neurodevelopment Clinics. The fellowship also includes intervention and treatment opportunities for children with communication disorders in the CDRC clinics.

In addition to clinical experience, the Clinical Fellow will also participate in

• Interdisciplinary training in the LEND program
• Weekly interdisciplinary seminars with topics related to community outreach, family issues that affect children with developmental disabilities, leadership, and policy development
• Participation in a family mentoring experience
• Engagement in a leadership/community engagement project
• A research project and presentation under the guidance of a mentor
• Leadership and teaching opportunities
• Opportunities for continuing education

The Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities program at the CDRC aims to provide training leadership in clinical care and coordination, family systems, education, public policy, community resources, and advocacy for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, utilizing an interdisciplinary model. Our annual LEND program includes faculty and a cohort of approximately 16 long term trainees from 12 disciplines, including speech-language pathology.

This fellowship is co-sponsored by the Division of Speech-Language Pathology and the Institute on Development & Disability at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon.

How to Apply: Applicants must be a US Citizen or have a permanent residency Visa, have the minimum of a master’s degree in speech-language pathology, a conditional license to practice in the state of Oregon (can be arranged after acceptance into the program), and meet all the requirements for clinical certification except the Clinical Fellowship. Once selected, trainees will be required to demonstrate that they have health insurance and that they have received all required vaccinations, to include COVID-19 vaccination. Current required vaccinations include: Diphtheria+Tetanus (within the last 10 years), Polio, Rubella, and Rubeola, or proof of prior disease.  COVID-19 vaccination is also required.
