When I was pregnant with Leo, some routine blood work indicated that my alpha fetoprotein levels were dangerously high, which is the marker for spina bifida.

We went in immediately for a consultation with the genetics counselor and were prepared for the worst. They told us he may have such severe spina bifida or anencephaly, and there was a possibility that he would not survive.

We then went for an ultrasound and were relieved to hear that his spinal cord was completely intact, his brain was perfect, and they only found a cleft lip and palate.

We were so grateful to hear this news that our little boy would be okay.

He was alive! He was born full term weighing 7lbs 2oz with a beautiful wide smile! Leo underwent 4 different surgeries to correct his cleft and is full of energy.
