ACPAACPA News, President's Letter

Amelia F. Drake, MD

I am so honored and excited to serve as ACPA’s president during our 75th Anniversary year. So many powerful leaders have come before me, and I stand humbled on the shoulders of giants. As I gaze at the coming year, ACPA will build on our rich history with new opportunities. With the merger of ACPA and CPF last year, we are well poised to raise awareness on cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies. Our annual campaign message, “We are Stronger Together” represents not only that we are now a merged organization, but also who we are. We work together on teams, with families and in professional collaboration to ensure optimal outcomes for all of those affected by cleft lip, cleft palate, and craniofacial anomalies. We are grateful to those who have supported the campaign and encourage those who have not to please consider making a donation.

Education is another area that will benefit from our united organization. With efficiencies created by the merger, we are now working to enhance our continuing education program to reach even more ACPA members and community care providers. We are currently developing a webinar initiative which we look forward to launching in the coming months. Not only will this add value for professionals in our field, our aim in the near future is to further expand and offer patient and family education via webinar as well. This exciting development is one illustration of how we are continuously striving for greater impact through our program activities.

Finally, for me – I look forward to creating opportunities within ACPA to cultivate our newest members and tap into a new generation of leaders. The ACPA Board has been deliberate in building greater transparency, increasing communication, and finding ways to identify and encourage involvement from a wide range of disciplines, geographies, institutions, generations and move beyond the politics and perceptions to build greater diversity and inclusion. We still have improvements to make, and I anticipate working with the Board to identify our next steps. Throughout the upcoming year, my guiding principle will continue to be that “We are Stronger Together.” Thank you for being part of our mission.
